The "Ideal Home" was the idea of Louis Bamberger, owner of the Newark department store. He wanted to create a home setting in which he could display the store's furniture and electrical appliances and accommodate the public. The house also had many novel electrical features including water heaters, burglar alarms, an inter-house telephone, baseboard outlets, and more.

Although the exterior has been largely preserved intact, the interior has undergone some changes. The main block suffered damages due to a fire that destroyed part of its roof, the third floor and the main stair.
This mansion is a remarkable example of adaptive reuse. It became a private school in 1925 and it continued this function until 1973 when it was purchased by the North Ward Center, a non-profit organization.

The William Clark House is located near Branch Brook park, in the Forrest Hills/North Ward part of Newark. Completed in 1880, this mansion served as the residence of the apparel magnate William Clark of the Clark Thread Company of Newark, who lived in the mansion until his death in 1902. This mansion represents one of the great earliest Forest Hill mansions and was designed in the Queen Anne style by the renowned architect, William Halsey Wood.
The entire structure sits on a partially raised basement, articulated on the exterior by ashlar masonry. The upper portions of the facades are made of red brick. The typical red brick walls monotony is broken by abundant stone accents, trims, quoins, decorative reliefs and beltcourses.
The main entrance is set beneath a gabled, central pavilion that projects from the center of the front façade. Marble columns support the portico-like, first-story portion of the pavilion.
The mansion does not spare the display of wealth and opulent materials on the interior and exterior. On the interior, the house displays an outstanding array of woodwork and plaster ornamentation.

This house was originally a rectory for Trinity church. Reverend Matthew H. Henderson lived in this house for nearly 48 years, until 1865. When the house was bought by the Symington family in 1888, they began remodeling the interior, and built additions. Symington House was one of the many mansions lining the north side of Military Park in the early 1800s. With the development of downtown Newark, most of these mansions were demolished with the exception of Symington House and Ballantine House, the latter fronting Washington Park. In 1965, the house was purchased by the Continental Insurance Company. They allowed the Newark Tercentennial Committee to use the building as its headquarters for the city's 300th anniversary. At this time, restoration was done on the building.

The Symington house is the third oldest house in Newark. This building is a 3-story brick townhouse originally constructed as a rectory for adjacent Trinity Church, now known as Trinity and St. Philip’s Cathedral. It is the best remaining example in Newark of Federal architecture. Architecturally, the front façade has a finely detailed entrance porch with fluted columns and Corinthian capitals approached by brownstone steps.

Condition History
The story of the Feigenspan company is linked to the development of breweries in Newark, that played an important part before and after Prohibition.
The mansion remained residential until 1999 when it was bought by the Community Agencies Corporation Peele Career Institute. In 2012, it was sold to Centro Cristiana Calvario Church.

The Feigenspan Mansion was the home of Christian Feigenspan, a brewery owner who manufactured the "Pride of Newark" beer. Feigenspan became famous for winning the silver medal at the 1891 Paris Exhibition. The mansion is also noted for being built to accommodate Christian's wife, Marie, who used a wheelchair. As a result, it is one of the prime examples of accessible design in high-end residential living.
This house was designed by Warringon G. Lawrence in 1905 who adopted the Second Renaissance Revival style. This thirty-seven-room mansion is a three story structure with three bays in the front façade and five bays on the side elevations. The materials used on the exterior are Roman brick and sandstone trims for the quonining, watertable, and moldings. The central bay on the front façade has an entrance arch with an aedicule framed by free-standing Tuscan columns. The aedicule is surmounted by a balustrated parapet around a baroque window with a broken pediment and side scrolls. The side windows on the first floor also have balustrated balconies and are capped with cornice caps. On the back, a glazed-in area serves as a palm-room.
It is important to note that this mansion is an early example of universal (barrier-free) design. A centrally-located elevator facilitated access to the most important areas of the house, while the bathroom shower stall enabled sitting.

Condition History
This complex was destroyed in 1994 by means of detonation. After decades of neglect, poor maintenance, and concentration of crime, housing authorities decided to demolish the towers and replace them with townhouses: the Wynona Lipman Gardens, administered by the Newark Housing Authority.

The Christopher Columbus Homes were a public housing complex located between High Street and Eighth Avenue, on the same superblock as the Colonnade and Pavilion Apartments. The complex, part of a Redevelopment Plan, was composed of eight 13-story tall slabs with 200 apartments each. In its inception it provided a close proximity to schools, Broad Street Station, Branch Brook Park, and a newly-constructed church—the Sacred Heart Church. While the site design is reminiscent of Hilberseimer’s urban schemes, the architecture of the apartments followed an orthodox public housing formula: cost-saving approaches were reflected by the bare brick façade, and restraint of finishes on the interior.

In the early 1990's, the Walsh Homes were deteriorating and were 60% vacant. The Newark Housing Authority (NHA) received an award in 1993 from the HOPE VI program, a program created by Congress in 1992 to address problems of severely distressed public housing. The award was originally intended for a revitalization project of the Walsh Homes, but a revised plan in 1995 called for the demolition and reconstruction of the Homes. The new development was designed to be half the size of the original residences and built as townhouses rather than high-rises. The property is currently being developed by the NHA to house The Waterfront, a sports, arts, and entertainment complex, designed by Comito & Associates. The groundbreaking for this project took place in October, 2010.

Condition History
The house was originally built for the family of James J. Dickerson, a leather manufacturer. James A. Coe purchased the house in 1886. The Coe family owned the James A. Coe & Company, the leading merchants of steel and hardware in Newark. In the early 20th century, the open two-story porch around the southeast corner of the house was enclosed to accommodate a billiard room and summer bedrooms. James Coe died in 1933 and his family continued to occupy the house until 1947, when it was sold to Benjamin Kulper. The house has continued to function as a residence with the exception of a period of 20 years when it was owned by a social service agency that did not occupy the premises.

The Glencoe Mansion is located on the easterly side of Martin Luther King Boulevard, formerly known as High Street. High Street was one of the most prominent locations of Newark with high end residential buildings occupied by affluent families. The Glencoe Mansion is a three-story brick building and it was designed in the High Victorian Italianate Style. As such, it has been highly decorated both inside and out. On the main façade (west), there are three bays articulated beautifully with architectural elements. Floor divisions are expressed by horizontal brick belt coursing separating tall windows and door openings, mostly topped with segmental-arch lintels. The third floor has a reduced height that accentuates the building mass when viewed from below. The symmetry of the façade is broken by the northernmost bay projecting forward and capped by a gable roof. In this bay there is variety from the first floor’s box bay to the bracket supported hooded lintel on the second floor, culminating in the paired round-arched windows on the third floor. The main entrance is part of a lavishly ornamented wooden open porch. The other façades, with the exception of the south elevation, are not as articulate and ornamented. On the interior, this mansion demonstrates the same attention to ornamentation with plaster walls and ceilings, crown moldings, medallions for lighting fixtures, wood parquet floors, and bronze hardware.
