Before working for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, Nies was a partner in the architectural firm Finkler & Nies, with Adolph Finkler, in Chicago in 1896. He is the architect behind Newark's Broad Street Station, a New Jersey Transit commuter rail and light rail station.
